CENTRE-BACK Steve Cook is hoping Cherries’ emphatic 3-0 win at Chelsea in January does not prove a once-in-a-career result.

The former Brighton man played 90 minutes as the Dorset club stunned the big-spending Blues thanks to goals from Callum Wilson, Junior Stanislas and Nathan Ake.

Back in December 2015, Cook played his part in another clean sheet at Stamford Bridge, Glenn Murray’s late effort giving Cherries a 1-0 win.

But the emphatic nature of last season’s away victory against the Blues – hailed by boss Eddie Howe as Cherries’ best display in the top flight – sent shockwaves through the Premier League.

And Cook is keen for another memorable result to come the way of the Dorset club when they visit the capital on Saturday (3pm).

He told the Daily Echo: “That night was incredible – probably the best night we’ve had. It was an amazing performance all-round.

“I hope it’s not a once-in-a-career result. We back ourselves to get the win and have no real pressure on us, so why not?

“It’s our fourth season in the Premier League and we feel we are Premier League players.

“As you have seen in the past two league games, we have a willingness to never give up and grind out results – that comes with the experience we have gained in the past few years.

“If that experience wasn’t there, it would be a bit worrying because it’s our fourth season.

“The belief in individuals has grown stronger and these are the games which you want to play in and enjoy because I don’t think you realise what an achievement it is until your career finishes.

“We want to savour these moments and, hopefully, have a night like last season.

“We approach every game the same. We want to attack. That is how the manager sets us up and that’s how we have played since I’ve been here.

“We’ve got clever players and good players.”

Cook locked horns with Chelsea’s £57million summer signing Jorginho when Napoli drew 2-2 with Cherries in a pre-season friendly last year.

“He was terrific,” said Cook. “Napoli were very good that night and everything came through him.

“Chelsea have started the season really well and it’s going to be a totally different game to what we faced last season.

“We are going to have to be at our best to get something there.

“You have to look at the players they have got across the board. It’s a very strong Chelsea side and the way their manager (Maurizio Sarri) wants to play is very difficult to play against."

Cherries have seven points from their opening three league games and Cook added: “I don’t think we can get too carried away. There is still a lot of work to be done.

“The first aim is to get over the 40-point mark and then you move on.

“The quicker we can do that the better and then the targets which we have set, secretly, will come into play.

“The future’s bright for us but we have to take things slowly.”
