WIMBORNE'S Fay Carpenter booked a dream trip to the 2008 World Championships in America after impressing at last weekend's HSBC Wee Wonders Grand Final.

The 10-year-old from St Michael's Middle School enjoyed a memorable bank holiday weekend at St Andrews - catching the eye of seven-time Ryder Cup star Colin Montgomerie in the process.

The Canford Magna Golf Club youngster, who beat off competition from over 3,000 competitors to qualify for the prestigious event, didn't disappoint in Scotland as she produced rounds of 31and 34 on the challenging links course.

"One of these 72 kids here will be, I am sure, not just a champion but a major champion and maybe that could be Fay," said Montgomerie.

"She played fantastically well and I'm sure his family will be very proud of her. It is a tough course with swirling winds but the kids demonstrated maturity beyond their years to master the conditions.

"Playing at St Andrews is an once-in-a-lifetime experience but I am sure we will be seeing more of Fay in years to come.

"This Wee Wonders was not around when I was growing up. You had to fight against golf clubs to gain access but now that has all changed and youth is encouraged because this is where the future lies."

Fay was one of 72 qualifiers for St Andrews after successfully navigating through a regional event at the Farrington Golf and Country Club back in June.

And father Jason Carpenter is keeping his fingers crossed Fay's HSBC Wee Wonders Grand Final appearance could be the start of something special in the years to come.

"She first picked up a golf club when she was three," he said. "It was just messing around in the back garden but she took to it straight away.

"It was clear from the start she was very talented. Her best achievement was finishing in the top ten of the US Kids World Championships in 2005.

"We are very proud of her- it has been a great experience for her.

"She first came here in 2003 and the years she does not qualify she is devastated."
