AN impressive performance from Bransgore’s Scott Mitchell proved not enough as he fell to a 5-2 defeat against Dave Chisnall at the Grand Slam of Darts.

The Dorset and England star recorded a three-dart average of 100.02, with nine 140s during his opening game of the event in Wolverhampton.

But despite Scotty Dog’s strong display, he could not stop Chisnall claiming the victory and propelling himself into a strong position in Group F.

St Helens ace Chisnall stamped his authority on the contest with the throw in the opening leg.

Despite Mitchell being poised with just 24 left, he took out 108 in clinical fashion to gain the early advantage.

A tidy checkout of 74 in the second leg from Mitchell restored parity at 1-1, before Chisnall picked up three legs on the bounce to race into a 4-1 lead.

Mitchell, who continued to score heavily, then hit tops in the sixth leg to pull one back.

But PDC world number eight Chisnall kept his cool by finding double two in the seventh leg to condemn the Dorset star to defeat.

Mitchell is set to be first up on stage tomorrow in his second group clash against Jeffrey de Zwaan.

Dutchman de Zwaan suffered a dramatic 5-4 loss to Stephen Bunting in his opening game earlier today.
