MATTY Holmes described as “soul-destroying” the 27-minute spell during which Wimborne Town’s FA Trophy hopes went up in smoke.
Magpies suffered a 5-0 thrashing at Southern League East outfit Thame United with all of the goals arriving during a disastrous first half.
Lynton Goss fired a 21-minute hat-trick and further goals from Dan West and Harry Mepham banked £3,250 for the reigning Hellenic League Premier Division champions.
Reflecting on the first qualifying round tie, boss Holmes told the Daily Echo: “It was a real kick in the teeth.
“There was a spell where we were bashed by Lynton Goss and Dan West and our defenders couldn’t handle them, which was soul-destroying because in general terms we kept the ball well.
“Those two boys were awesome and we crumbled in that 27-minute period. I hope it’s a one-off.”
Scott Arnold was substituted midway through the first period as a precaution, with Holmes concerned the skipper was still suffering from the effects of a groin injury.
Magpies: Benfield, Penny (Walker, h-t), Maybury, Arnold (S Davidson, 32), Oldring, Kellaway (Francis, 70), Stokoe, L Holmes, T Holmes, Burbidge, Lovell. Unused sub: Bayston.
