BENIK Afobe has revealed a desire to pay tribute to Ugo Ehiogu was behind his goal celebration during Cherries' victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday.
Former Aston Villa and Boro defender Ehiogu died last week at the age of 44, less than 24 hours after suffering a cardiac arrest at Tottenham Hotspur's training centre, where he was under-23s coach.
The game at Vitality Stadium was preceded by a thunderous minute's applause for Ehiogu, who won four England caps during a distinguished 20-year career, and the visiting supporters staged their own ovation for their former player in the 44th minute.
Both sets of players wore black armbands to mark the passing of a man who won the League Cup with Middlesbrough in 2004 and also played for West Bromwich, Leeds, Rangers and Sheffield United.
Afobe netted Cherries' second goal in the 16th minute and reacted by removing his armband, kissing it and hoisting it in the air, before pointing skywards.
"I didn't know Ugo, I was just paying respect to a man that meant a lot to a lot of British fans and it was against his old team," said Afobe.
"It just happened so suddenly. To pass away at the age of 44, it's massive and I just wanted to show some respect to him and his family and, hopefully, they can get through this tough time."
