MODEST Glyn Treagus insists that comparisons between him and spin king Monty Panesar are wide of the mark, after his 11-wicket haul fired Dorset to a crushing victory over Cornwall.

Treagus, who also cracked a brilliant 94 with the bat in his side's first innings, picked up six wickets for 39 with his off-spin - to add to his five for 73 from the first innings.

And his 17-over spell helped Cornwall crumble to 149 all out in their second innings to seal a 170-run success - Dorset's fifth Minor Counties Championship success on the bounce and their first win over the Duchy for seven years.

But while Panesar spun England to Test victory on Monday, the Bashley batsman believes the Truro pitch was the major factor behind career best bowling figures of 11 for 112.

Treagus told the Daily Echo: "It was a pretty helpful pitch, if I'm being honest.

"I bowled pretty accurately, but I don't normally turn it an awful lot and it was turning sideways, so it had to be something to do with the pitch.

"I'm predominantly a batsman who bowls a bit, so let's just say that nobody's calling me Monty just yet - but if I do it a bit more regularly, that might change!"

With Dorset on 161 for three overnight, debutant Nick Park's superb 122 and nightwatchman Matt Metcalfe's 59, set the visitors on their way to 358 for eight and set Cornwall a target of 321 to win.

But with fellow spinner Tom Hicks also chipping in with four for 58, Cornwall slumped from 108 for two as they lost their last eight wickets for just 41 runs.

Treagus, meanwhile, reserved special praise for young Bournemouth batsman Park who secured a fine hundred after resuming on 54 not out yesterday morning.

Treagus said: "Nick batted absolutely brilliantly in the second innings and set up the score that we were able to bowl at. To get a hundred on your debut is a fantastic effort.

"He looked a bit nervous in the one dayers, but he went in and batted with real confidence. It was a great innings and a fine team performance."

After Dorset's disappointing one-day campaign, Treagus has now set his sights on success in the three-day version of the Minor Counties game.

Treagus said: "We didn't do ourselves justice in the one dayers, but we're chuffed to bits to win our first game and now we need to build on a very good start."
