CHERRIES midfielders Harry Arter and Eunan O’Kane tonight agonisingly missed out on places in the Republic of Ireland squad for Euro 2016.

Arter yesterday withdrew from a Republic training session due to a thigh injury and subsequently returned home for treatment.

He was rumoured to be out of contention prior to the 2-1 friendly defeat to Belarus tonight, a fixture which saw substitute O’Kane come on for the final 15 minutes.

Following the duo’s respective disappointments, Artur Boruc is the only member of Cherries' squad set to travel to France.

The experienced goalkeeper became the first Cherries player in 26 years to earn selection for a major international tournament when he was named in the Poland squad.

Boruc, whose Cherries deal is due to expire this summer, is set to follow in the footsteps of former Dean Court stopper Gerry Peyton who was part of the Republic of Ireland squad for the 1990 World Cup.

Peyton did not feature in Italy with the last Cherries player to secure match minutes at a major tournament being ex-Northern Ireland striker Colin Clarke at the 1986 World Cup.

Boruc will compete for a starting place alongside Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski and Roma’s Wojciech Szczesny and will hope to feature when the White and Reds take on the Netherlands tomorrow (7.45) and Lithuania on Monday.

Cherries frontman Joshua King will be keen to be involved when Norway take on Iceland in a friendly tomorrow.
