TEAM manager Neil Middleditch has urged British speedway bosses to target a swifter season after Poole Pirates’ 2014 campaign was extended again.

Pirates’ play-off semi-final second-leg clash with King’s Lynn was called off for a second time due to a waterlogged Wimborne Road surface.

Middleditch’s men will now face the Stars on Wednesday - 12 months to the day since Poole defeated Birmingham in the second leg of the 2013 grand final.

This year’s Elite League champions will not be known until at least late October and Middleditch admitted he would be keen to avoid the current scenario again.

He told the Daily Echo: “It’s difficult to know how to change it because you can’t start the season any earlier as you have the same problem with the weather then.

“Maybe there is something they could look at to speed the process up and get a few more meetings on earlier in the season.

“It’s difficult because so many of the riders are involved in continental fixtures – that’s one of the biggest problems.

“I don’t think you could reduce the size of the league any more but you could certainly streamline the fixtures a bit.”

On tis evening’s postponement, Middleditch added: “We had rain on and off throughout the day and at one point it was almost at monsoon proportions.

“Even if it had stopped raining, the track was never going to dry so it was definitely the right decision.”

The two teams had initially convened on Monday but all 14 riders were unwilling to race due to a hole in the Wimborne Road track.

Poole hold a 45-44 advantage over their rivals heading into next week’s second leg.
