STUBBORN Benji Compton says a broken finger will not stop him taking his place in the Pirates side for the remaining three regular-season fixtures.

The 27-year-old reserve suffered the injury in a fall during the 45-45 draw at Lakeside on Friday, a result which secured the defending champions’ place in the play-offs.

Compton was at the rear of the field when he fell on bend one of lap two, breaking the little finger on his left hand.

The estimated period of recovery is a month but Compton has vowed to put up with slight discomfort in order to continue racing.

He told the Daily Echo: “I practised a bit on Sunday and the injury was good so I’m going to carry on riding.

“It will be fine. I’ve ridden with broken bones before and it’s not a problem.”

Pirates, without the suspended Darcy Ward and the injured Shamek Pawlicki in recent times, are next in action at home to Eastbourne on Wednesday.

Neil Middleditch’s team travel to Coventry in seven days and visit Leicester in a rearranged fixture 48 hours later.
