ALAN Wong smashed two Dorset junior records as he helped the county team to two of their four wins in Division Two of the British Gas ASA County Team Championships at Sheffield.

The team – relegated from Division One last year – missed out on an immediate return as they finished sixth in Division Two. The top four are promoted.

Wong, 15, from Swim Bournemouth, finished almost a second ahead of his nearest challenger as he won the 100m backstroke in 58.16sec.

The time knocked almost two seconds off his previous best and 1.35sec off the Dorset junior short-course record, held by Jay Olenicz of Bournemouth Dol-phins since 2009.

Wong’s other record came in the backstroke leg of the 14-15yrs boys’ 4x50m medley relay.

His lead-off time of 27.57sec was a 0.36sec improvement on the previous mark, also set by Olenicz in 2009.

Dorset team-mates Zak Aitchison (breaststroke 30.97), Ben Wickens (butterfly 27.37) and Spencer Wilks (freestyle 25.05) completed the victory in 1:50.96, 1.6sec ahead.

This was Dorset’s second victory in the relays following a win in the 16-17yrs boys’ medley event in 1:47.42 by Cianan Mann (back 28.40), Noah Vides (29.70), Todd Price (25.77) and Dan Speers (23.55).

Vides, Price and Speers were all members of the Poole team that became national age group medley relay champions two years ago, when the fourth member of the quartet was Alan Wong.

Dorset’s other winner at Ponds Forge was Bournemouth Collegiate School’s (BCS) Beth Aitchison, who recorded 1:10.85 in the 16-17yrs 100m breaststroke.

Poole’s Madison Kemp and Noah Vides both achieved third places.

Kemp was third in the 14-15yrs 100m breaststroke in 1:12.92 and fourth in the 100m butterfly (1:03.86).

Vides came third in the 16-17yrs 100m breaststroke in 1:07.70.

Swim Bournemouth’s Jemma Green was fourth in the 12-13yrs 100m butterfly in 1:09.05 and ninth in the 100m freestyle (1:01.73).

Fifth places went to Swim Bournemouth’s Harriet Perfect in the 12-13yrs 100m backstroke (1:06.84), Poole’s Todd Price in the 16-17yrs 100m butterfly (58.04) and BCS’s Zak Aitchison in the 14-15yrs 100m breaststroke (1:07.86).

Aitchison was also seventh in the 100m freestyle in 55.06.

Also fifth were the girls’ 16-17yrs medley team of Ellie Kerslake, Beth Aitchison, Danielle Thwaites and Lucy Kirkham, and the mixed 6x50m freestyle team of Madison Kemp, Jacob Peters, Jemma Green, Zak Aitchison, Lucy Kirkham and Dan Speers.

Dorset finished in the top 10 in 23 of the 31 events.

“The team swam amazingly well and recorded many PBs,” said team manager Sue Smart. “There was a great team spirit.”
