Asda will be allowing hourly paid store colleagues to take a paid day off on the day of the King’s Coronation if they’re currently scheduled to work.

Those working on Monday, May 8 which is a Bank Holiday can request a day off to take part in the Big Help Out - a national day of volunteering to mark His Majesty The King’s Coronation.

More than 380 Asda Community Champions across the UK will help bring communities together to make a difference in their area by arranging litter picks in places such as parks, community centres, beaches and canals to further support the volunteering day.

Asda colleagues who would like to take the day off will be paid and their holiday entitlement will be unaffected.

If colleagues wish to work their shift on Monday, May 8, they will receive double time.

Customers can look out for details for the Big Help Out events and other local volunteering opportunities advertised on community boards in Asda stores.

Asda will also be surprising 10 Coronation-inspired community projects across the country with funding.

Asda Chief People and Corporate Affairs Officer, Hayley Tatum, said: “We’re proud to mark the Coronation of King Charles III by supporting the ‘Big Help Out’ and enabling our colleagues to come together, celebrate and give back to their local communities.

“We understand that this is an incredibly important event for many of our colleagues, and they want to get involved, which is why we’re offering them the opportunity to take a day off to support their local area, without needing to use their holiday entitlement.

“We are also saying thank you to those colleagues who do choose to work on Monday 8th May by offering them a double time payment as a thank you for their continued efforts to serve our customers over the Bank Holiday weekend.”
