The Duke of Sussex was left ‘heartbroken’ after his grandmother’s initials ‘ER’ were removed from his military uniform ahead of the grandchildren’s vigil, according to reports.

The removal came as both Prince Harry and his brother William, the Prince of Wales came together with their cousins to stand beside the Queen’s coffin in Westminster Hall on Saturday evening.

The Prince of Wales led his brother the Duke of Sussex, as well as his cousins Zara Tindall and Peter Philips, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and Lady Louise Windsor and Viscount Severn into Westminster Hall.

William was followed in by Harry, with the Duke of York’s daughters, the Earl of Wessex’s children and the Princess Royal’s children behind them.

The brothers both wore their military uniform after their father, King Charles III granted his youngest son to do so, amid prior rules that stopped the Duke of Sussex from wearing his uniform.

However, according to reports from The Sunday Times, the Prince was left dismayed when he first received his uniform.

The reaction came after noticing the removal of the initials ‘ER’ that honours his late grandmother stitched to the shoulder, whilst his brother was allowed to keep the initials.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, a friend told the paper: “He is heartbroken. To remove his grandmother’s initials feels very intentional.”

Elsewhere, the Duke’s uncle, Prince Andrew who is no longer a working royal was able to keep the initials on his uniform during the Queen’s children's vigil on Friday evening.
