Boris Johnson is holding a press conference at 5 pm on social media and you can watch it live here.

The Prime Minister will be speaking at a Downing Street conference at 5 pm on Wednesday, December 15 as concerns are raised over new Covid-19 restrictions and the spread of the Omicron variant.

Mr Johnson made the announcement via the official Downing Street Twitter account earlier on Wednesday.

He will appear alongside Professor Christ Whitty, chief medical officer for England, as well as Dr Nikki Kanani, medical director of primary care for NHS England.

The public was told that they would be able to watch the Covid announcement via the UK Government’s Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Twitch channels.

There has been widespread speculation about what the Prime Minister might discuss during Wednesday's conference.

Mr Johnson is expected to give an update on the number of Omicron cases currently reported in the UK.

The vaccination programme has also been extended to include all adults so an update on the target to offer all over 18s a booster vaccine by the end of 2021 is expected.

The Prime Minister may also choose to address the rebellion in the Tory ranks during Tuesday's Plan B restrictions vote.

Festive events being held at Downing Street last year were also hotly debated at Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) on Wednesday and are likely to continue into the 5 pm conference and in the coming days.

While Downing Street has insisted on Wednesday that there were “no plans” for more coronavirus restrictions in England, the Prime Minister would not rule out further measures during PMQs.
