Dorset Through Time by Steve Wallis is a new title that examines how the county has evolved over the last hundred years.

The changes are illustrated through a collection of photographs taken by the author of modern-day Dorset, including views of Bournemouth Square and landmarks such as Corfe Castle and Lulworth Cove.

These photos have been placed next to photographs taken in the early part of the 20th century and provide an intriguing contrast showing how particular scenes have altered over the years.

The book is separated into five chapters, each concerning different aspects of the county including towns, tourism, villages, the Dorset coastline and living in Dorset.

Steve Wallis feels that the book does not indicate the evolution he expected to find, saying: “I was surprised at some of the changes, but also how little had changed in places and that is one of the charms of Dorset”.

He thinks that the increase in industry in the area and developments in transport are the main factors in creating some of the transformations that have occurred.

The book also investigates some of Dorset’s countryside and gives the reader the opportunity to see the variety of landscapes in the county and to view some of the lesser-known areas including numerous villages.

Steve Wallis believes that Dorset will continue to see change and evolution over the next hundred years, but for now this book is looking to the past and is an intriguing insight into the history of the county.
