A teenaged cyclist is planning to topple a cricket legend from the top of the fundraising scoreboard – by clocking up another century.

Kieran Thorne, 16, is preparing to complete the 100-mile route in the Echo-backed Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride for the second successive year.

And Kieran hopes that by doing so, he will raise more than the ride’s best known participant, and chief fundraiser, former England cricket captain, David Gower.

Kieran raised an impressive £1,412 after nearly six hours in the saddle in the 2009 event, and is hoping to raise even more this year after making fundraising a family affair.

Kieran’s parents and grandparents are opening their gardens to the public on June 13 and 27 between 11am and 5pm at 13 St Mary’s Road, Ferndown, and 77 Church Road, Ferndown.

“Proceeds will be added to my sponsorship for the bike ride, as I hope to raise more than last year - and maybe even knock David Gower into second place!” joked Kieran.

The England cricket legend will be among a host of high-profile figures taking part in this year’s ride on July 4 – including Daily Echo Editor-in-Chief, Neal Butterworth.
