THE Dorset Destroyers are hoping to smash a world record this weekend.

Around 40 people will attempt to play wheelchair rugby for 26 hours at Rossmore Leisure Centre in Parkstone.

The gruelling challenge starts at 1pm on Saturday and runs until 3pm on Sunday.

The current world record was set by a club in Poland.

Nick Coombs, chairman of The Dorset Destroyers, said: “The idea behind it is to promote the club itself, to promote the sport of Wheelchair Rugby and to raise money to give more disabled people the opportunity to play Wheelchair Rugby.

“Our aim is to reach £10,000.”

He added: “The money will be used to buy more rugby wheelchairs to enable disabled people from around the area to access this amazing and energetic sport.”

Money raised will also go towards the Royal Signals Benevolent Fund and Cakes 4 Casualties.

At least 18 members of The Dorset Destroyers will play on the day and the Royal Signals and 4com will be providing players to play against them.

Doors open at 12.45pm on Saturday and members of the public are invited to watch and support the team.

Entry is free and there will be cakes and drinks on sale as well as a raffle with more than 30 prized donated by local business.
