A PASSIONATE biker who died earlier this year has been honoured by having the Poole Bike of the Year trophy named after him.

David William Holloway, known as Midge, was a regular supporter of the Tuesday bike nights on Poole Quay, and won Bike of the Year in 2010 with his Triumph Bonneville T120R.

On Tuesday night the 2012 winner of the Coles Miller Dream Machines Bike of the Year, Allen Millyard with his Millyard Viper V10 took home the David “Midge” Holloway Trophy.

Following the death of the Poole born and bred 70 year-old, his family contacted event sponsors, solicitors Coles Miller, to see if there was a way of commemorating his love of bikes.

“Bikes were such a key part of Midge’s life and it is wonderful to think that he will be remembered as part of an event that he loved so much,” said his niece, Rosemary Ponting-Fry.

“He would have been really proud.”

He lived in the same Poole house all his life, trained as a carpenter and built his first fishing boat, The Aquarius. He ran fishing parties in the summer and fished for cod in the winter, before retiring to spend more time building and restoring bikes.

“The event was really close to Midge’s heart because it gave him the chance to catch up with friends and enjoy his passion for British bikes,” said Rosemary.

“He came third in the competition in 2009 and was over the moon when he won the Bike of the Year in 2010. It’s a wonderful way to keep his memory alive.”

The Poole Tourism organised popular bike night roared onto the quay for the final time this season when bikers and spectators voted for their favourite in the line-up of 19 gleaming weekly winners.

Rosemary presented Allen with the trophy, which he will hold for a year before presenting it to next year’s winner, and the top three received cash and voucher prizes.

Adrian Cormack, partner at Coles Miller said: “This has been a great season and we are particularly proud to be presenting the David “Midge” Holloway Trophy to the Bike of the Year winner for the first time.

“It is a wonderful tribute to Midge and all the Coles Miller Dream Machines regulars who have made this event a Poole Quay tradition and such a key part of the town’s special events programme.”
