A Boscombe building society is to be transformed into an adult gaming centre, despite fears that the development will fuel crime, antisocial behaviour and gambling.

The council’s planning board voted in favour of the change of use at Christchurch Road after 21 objections were sent to the Town Hall.

Among objectors, who claimed the scheme would have a negative impact on much-needed investment in the shopping centre, were Boscombe West ward councillor Jane Kelly.

In a report to the planning board, planning officer Richard Cable said the proposed centre, on the ground floor and basement level of the premises, would contain “amusement with prizes” machines and also offer ancillary retail sales and catering.

He stressed that there would be no “amusement only” machines and access would be restricted to over-18s.

Mr Cable said: “Concerns have been raised in respect to the potential of the proposals to give rise to antisocial and criminal behaviour. No evidence has been provided that would support this contention.

“Concerns have been raised in respect to the potential of the proposals to attract vulnerable members of the community to indulge in gambling. However no evidence has been provided to support this contention.”

He added that the development site had been vacant for at least four years and would provide employment for four full-time staff.

Recommending that permission was granted, he concluded that the scheme would “make a positive contribution to the function, vitality and viability of the Boscombe district shopping centre and safeguard existing amenities.”

A move by board vice-chairman Ron Whittaker to grant approval for the scheme was seconded by Cllr Beryl Baxter and agreed by six votes to one. Speaking after the meeting Cllr Kelly told the Daily Echo: “I can see both sides of the argument; inward investment in the precinct is always welcome but I had reservations about this kind of development. However, as long as the premises are well run, we must go along with the planning decision.”
