TOP bands and trade union heavyweights have been lined up for this weekend’s Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival.

The event, at Purbeck’s Tolpuddle Village – the trade union movement’s spiritual birthplace – draws large crowds from across the country, indeed the world.

Ska band Selecter will be one of this year’s highlights.

There are a handful of events on Friday, before the main proceedings get underway on Saturday and Sunday. The main procession through the village is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Speakers include BBC Newsnight economic editor Paul Mason, author Louise Raw, columnist and writer Owen Jones and Lord John Monks, former general secretary of the TUC.
