THE biggest union flag in the world provides a patriotic backdrop to the red white and blue finale of Gerry Cottle’s Circus spectacular in Poole for the Jubilee.

The 40ft by 33ft monster fills the big top at Branksome Recreation Ground, and brings to a close the show featuring 50 acts in 100 minutes.

It marks 50 years since circus legend Gerry Cottle ran away to the circus aged 15. Despite retiring eight years ago, the 67-year-old couldn’t resist a return for this Jubilee year, and he has put together a 40-strong cast including his daughters and granddaughters, as well as nine graduates from his circus school at Wookey Hole in Somerset.

It also marks something of a homecoming for him – having brought his first ever circus to Bournemouth more than 40 years ago. He said: “There is a great story to the flag too.

“It was first used by Billy Smart when they filmed the BBC specials in Windsor, one of which of course was attended by her Majesty the Queen.”

Gareth Ellis, aka Bippo the Clown, said: “Because we’ve got the Jubilee and the Olympics this year we thought why not use something so patriotic. Union flags are everywhere – but we’ve got the biggest one in the world. It gets a round of applause when it gets lifted.”

The show, which opened last night, will be in Poole until June 10, and features everything from magic to acrobats and from the high wire act to the wheel of death.

“It’s very fast moving,” said circus manageress Maureen Carter.

“What makes it such as success is the energy in the show – it’s full of young, hard working performers.”

While it’s billed as the last time Gerry’s circus will be in town, Maureen added: “Never say never. This is the life he loves. I believe he’ll still be going strong at 80.”
