THE Great Dorset Beach Clean attracted 36 volunteers who collected 47 bags of litter from scenic Worbarrow Bay.

Purbeck’s clean-up hosted by Dorset Wildlife Trust and Surfers Against Sewage resulted in 162kg of litter picked up from the World Heritage Site beach.

The litter included 317 plastic drinks bottles sporting the logo of most major brands, many of which will be sent back to manufacturers as part of SAS’s Return to Sender campaign.

“This was a fantastic effort by the volunteers, who have made Worbarrow Bay safer for wildlife by removing litter that is not only unsightly but potentially deadly to birds, mammals and sea creatures,” said Marc Smith, the trust’s marine officer.

“Plastic bottles, drinks cans, fishing line, plastic bags, bottle caps, broken glass, cotton buds and small pieces of plastic are just some of the litter typical of UK beaches.

“Unfortunately, the beach will not stay clean for long, with more litter being washed in on each tide, so we would urge everybody to reduce, re-use and recycle our waste to help eliminate this problem for ever.”
