TWO potential Olympic stars of the future re-opened a Poole gym after a £350,000 refit.

Nathan Bailey and Daniel Speers joined the Mayor at Rossmore Leisure Centre on Saturday.

The new gym area is three times as big as the old one, and the number of cardio-vascular machines has doubled from 23 to 50.

Poole Council paid for the refit, the first major overhaul since 1998, and there were special free lessons for residents all weekend.

Nathan Bailey, 18, an Olympic torch bearer from Southbourne, trains at Rossmore and is a Great Britain trampolinist with hopes of making Rio 2016.

Swimmer Daniel Speers, from Poole, trains in the 25 metre pool, and he made the London Olympic trials in March aged just 14, competing in the 100m freestyle and 200m butterfly. The improvements also include modernised poolside showers and toilets, and an interactive sports wall.

Manager Sean Gabriel said: “It was a little bit tired before the refit but it was an amazingly popular place – we have 1,400 members. We have new Trixer bikes in the gym and they give you a fantastic workout.”

He said Rossmore also specialises in healthy fitness classes for people who have suffered strokes or heart problems.

The leisure centre is run by Everyone Active on behalf of Poole council.

Mayor Cllr Graham Wilson said: “We have are very pleased to work in partnership with them. The improved gym and facilities will offer exciting opportunities to keep fit and have fun.”
