HUNDREDS of students showed off their stunning dance and drama skills to compete in Rock Challenge 2012 at Bournemouth's Pavilion.

Competitors from 12 schools battled it out in front of an enthusiastic, sellout audience in a bid to win a place in the southern region final in Portsmouth in June.

With themes ranging from the London riots, Reduce, Re-use Recycle, One Small Step for Man and True Blood they confidently demonstrated the hard work and rehearsal that went into creating each performance. Oakmead College of Technology stormed to victory with their colourful, moving and powerful portrayal of Hiroshima.

Runners-up Corfe Hills, whose theme was Once You Choose Hope Anything Can Happen, earned the other sought-after place in the regional final.

Hundreds of students from each school had been involved in creating the pieces with costumes, hair, make-up, set design, lighting and choreography all created by pupils.

The event was part of the Global Rock Challenge, which involves thousands of children around the world and aims to help them live healthy lives, free from drugs and alcohol. It was presented by the Be Your Best Foundation which aims to promote health and provide positive leisure time activities.

Just one junior school, St Mary's Combined from Poole, were involved and they received special awards from the judges.
