OCCUPY protesters have refused to leave their latest camp at Bournemouth University.

Members of the group, who have moved around the town over the past few months as they voice their opposition to the global economic system and distribution of wealth, have set up temporary home at the entrance near the Boundary Roundabout at the Talbot Campus.

A Bournemouth University spokesman said: “Bournemouth University has asked the protesters to leave and they have refused.

“We are currently exploring our options and will take the best course of action possible which may nevertheless take some time.

“Our priorities are the safety and security of staff and students, and to ensure that the education of our students is not disrupted by these demonstrators, whose protest is not, after all, against BU.”

Some protesters claimed they had been “fenced in” in a bid to stop free speech but the university spokesman stressed that this wasn’t the case and said protesters had been invited to have their say at a student forum on Friday afternoon.

Their presence sparked a mixed reaction from students.

'Confusing ideology'

• Anastasia Marshall, 20, said: “Most of the students don’t really understand what they’re doing, I didn’t really know until I spoke to them.

“I feel a bit like they’re a bunch of moaners. When I spoke to them they seemed to have lost sight of what they’re protesting about.”

• Ellie Main, 20, said: “I interviewed them for the Bournemouth University TV channel and the thing that struck me most was they seemed confused about their ideology. Credit to them for trying to change the world, but if they’ve lost their ideology this isn’t the best way to go about it.”
