PUBLIC toilets in Bournemouth are the next in line for refurbishment as part of a £1m Smart Streets programme.

Improvements worth £175,000 will begin this spring on the town’s most heavily used public conveniences.

The toilets in the Lower Gardens will be fully redecorated and a new ‘Changing Places’ facility will provide extra help for people with disabilities. There are also plans to base an attendant there, to help maintain standards and reduce antisocial behaviour.

The council also plans to close the toilets at Poole Hill, which have consistently suffered from vandalism and antisocial behaviour, and will move the automated facility from there to the travel interchange instead. The existing toilets at the travel interchange will also be redecorated.

Smart Streets is a 12-month programme in which £1m is being invested in environmental and street scene improvements across Bournemouth. Other initiatives include a team of dedicated street cleansing champions, new solar powered litter bins and repainting benches and railings.
