LAST year 300 police officers were assaulted while on duty in Dorset, the Daily Echo can reveal.

PC Craig Bartlett was seriously stabbed as he carried out an arrest in Bournemouth town centre – Michael Edward, 45, is now serving a 25 year sentence for attempted murder.

A further 101 crimes of actual bodily harm (ABH) were committed on constables and 198 officers reported they were assaulted but did not suffer injury.

In 2010 88 police officers were the victim of ABH and 215 were assaulted without injury. In 2009 the figures were 108 and 221 respectively.

In 2008 one constable was the victim of a grievous bodily harm (GBH) assault, 119 the victims of ABH and 186 non-injury assaults.

In 2007 five police officers were the victims of GBH assaults, 81 the victims of ABH and 168 non-injury assaults were recorded.

Non-injury assaults can include offences such as throwing beer or water over a constable, spitting at them or pushing them.
