AFC Bournemouth wants more road signs directing fans to Dean Court to ease matchday congestion and confusion.

The council has agreed to meetings and has asked the club to contribute towards the costs.

Cherries director Rob Mitchell said there was a lack of signs during January’s meeting of Bournemouth Chamber of Trade.

He told business leaders: “A lot of the existing signs are on our doorstep.

“People say that they find it difficult to find the ground and a number of people don’t know exactly where we are located.

“We have two or three brown signs already, and there’s a yellow one as well, but there are letters falling off, so there’s a need to get them sorted as soon as possible.”

He passed around examples of proposed signs and locations, mainly on the Wessex Way between Poole and Ashley Heath.

The incoming chief executive Tony Williams told Mr Mitchell: “I will ensure meetings are set up with the council and the football club, though we would need your commitment to at least some payment.”

The meeting heard the brown tourist signs can direct people to locations but cannot be used as advertisements.

Nigel Hedges, president of the chamber, pictured, said: “This isn’t about a business trying to advertise, this is about stopping people getting lost, especially if they come from the west.

“The club is in a congested area of the town and we certainly don’t want people lost around there.”

Castlepoint manager Peter Matthews suggested using the electronic signs on the Wessex Way to direct fans on matchdays.

Mr Mitchell also said the club was also going to ask for signage at Bournemouth and Pokesdown Train stations.

Caroline Read, owner of Scribe Tattoo and Diner, next to Pokesdown station, said: “Lots of people get off at the station and have no idea where to go and head off down the main road into Boscombe.”
