THE largest teachers’ union is calling for urgent talks with the Government on the future of teachers’ pensions.
Following a meeting of the National Union of Teachers’ Executive on Monday the union has agreed to continue to pursue further changes to controversial pension proposals.
Andy Woolley, South West regional secretary of the NUT, said: “We remain committed to a negotiated agreement on pensions.
“However, these proposals will not, in our opinion, serve the interests of teachers or the education system.
“Michael Gove assured us in December that sufficient time and resources would be provided to secure a solution.
“The Government must face the fact that further discussions and additional funding are needed.”
The NUT remains concerned about proposed increases in employee contributions and pension ages.
It is warning that increasing contributions will lead to many teachers opting out from pension provision as well as threatening the future of the pension scheme.
