A FAULT at a pedestrian crossing where Poole man Ray Tutton was killed in a hit-and-run collision has been rectified after his death renewed public concerns.

Ray and his wife Liz crossed Poole Road, Branksome, with the traffic lights on red and the audio signal sounding when the tragedy took place on Christmas Eve.

But, although there was no link between the crossing’s function and the death, it led to some regulars in the nearby Branksome Railway Hotel raising worries that pedestrians were risking crossing the road while the lights were green because they took too long to change to red.

As reported in the Daily Echo, John Sprackling, pictured, the chairman of Branksome Park, Canford Cliffs and District Residents’ Association, also contacted Borough of Poole over the issue, saying that walkers had to wait too long to be able to cross.

Now the council has recognised that there was a problem with the lights, which often took a minute to change before pedestrians were allowed to cross at the lights safely.

Steve Tite, traffic manager at Borough of Poole, said: “Following a number of representations from regular users of this crossing our engineers have visited the site and there was indeed a fault, which has now been rectified.

“While this did mean that at times pedestrians had to wait slightly longer than they needed to before the green man came up, at no time was the delay excessive.

“Unfortunately we do occasionally experience equipment problems such as this and we do appreciate any feedback we receive from the general public.”
