THE family of a girl with cerebral palsy has thanked fundraisers after raising £50,000 for a life-changing operation.

Lucy and Phil Hood started the campaign, Missy’s Future Appeal, around four months ago to pay for surgery for their little girl, Mellissa, two.

Mellissa was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was one and the condition affects her legs forcing them to turn inwards and meaning when held, she walks high on her toes, causing her discomfort.

But a life-changing operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy at St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri could change that.

And now, thanks to the generosity of local people, the family are set to fly out to America next month for the surgery.

“I just can’t believe it”, said Lucy.

“It took us just 16 weeks and three days. When we started getting close to target, people were ringing us up and saying they wanted to give Mellissa the money they were going to use for their Christmases.

“Obviously I’m over the moon, but actually feeling a bit nervous now.

“I don’t think Mellissa really understands, but we’re just so happy.

“Everyone has been so generous from one-off donations to different events people have put on.”

The family, from Alderholt near Fordingbridge, reached their target with a donation of £1,125 from 1310 Flight Engineers and Aircrew at RAF Odiham, who had taken part in a sponsored cycle ride.

The couple thanked the communities around Fording-bridge, Alderholt and Ringwood for all their fundraising.

“I just want to thank everyone who has helped in some way”, Lucy added.

They will fly out to Missouri on February 18.
