Poole’s newest political party has thrown its weight behind an alternative proposal to extend the Poole Quay Boat Haven.

Poole People is backing Poole Harbour Commissioners second proposal for an extended marina on the quay, rather than the contentious proposal in front of Hamworthy Park.

The party, which has three councillors, has issued its qualified support and has urged residents and business owners to have their say.

PHC revealed its alternative site for a 900-berth marina and cruise ship berth when it launched its draft Port Master Plan in September, and is now engaged in a 20-week consultation exercise.

The first plan to build a marine centre on the Poole Yacht Club site aroused fierce opposition from residents and windsurfers, amid fears for the effect on Hamworthy Park.

Poole People is seeking cross-party support for its views and is urging a steering group be set up including council representatives, residents and business owners to advise on the development of the marine centre once a location has been decided.

“We wish to work with Poole Harbour Commissioners to create a positive vision for Poole Quay that works for everyone,” said Cllr Mark Howell, the party’s leader.

“If its construction is combined with removal of the flood defence wall, space can be opened up for events, street entertainers and table service in the summer, and parking in the winter, for the benefit of the people of Poole, local businesses and tourists.”

The party’s support is subject to the conditions:

• PHC wins the support of local residents

• There is a sound business plan

• The marina wall incorporates a public walkway

• Poole Quay is re-piled, increasing the height and allowing the flood wall to be removed

• The marine centre respects the history of Poole Quay

• Facilities are included for tall ships

• It has dedicated moorings for visiting yachts

• A marine-focused tourist attraction is created in the vicinity

• Parking for boat owners is at the port with a water taxi service.

PHC chairman Richard Lacey has urged any groups who wish to speak to them to get in touch and there are drop in sessions at the North Lounge of the passenger terminal at the port on November 3 from 11am to 3pm and on 4th from 3pm and 7pm.

“We’re delighted with the response so far and would urge people to continue to respond via the microsite phc.co.uk/masterplan as well as our new Facebook page,” he said.
