SUPPORT your local traders on July 4 – ‘Independent’s Day’.

That’s the call from retailers in Dorset as they urge people to support a national campaign.

The idea comes from the part Government-funded trade body Skillsmart Retail.

It warns that from the UK’s 2,700 shopping destinations, vacant shop rates are on the rise and have now hit 14.6 per cent.

Bournemouth Chamber of Trade is backing the campaign and vice-president Mandy Payne and is handing out posters to members.

She said: “Independents are what make Bournemouth special.”

Wimborne has just launched its Business Improvement District and independents are seen as key to the project’s success.

Diann March, chairman of Wimborne Minster and District Chamber of Trade, said: “I am a great one for the independent retailers and the little shops and I think Wimborne would be lost without them.

“People come to market towns for the independent shops, rather than going to the clone towns.”

Skillsmart is urging people to buy at least one item from a local, independent shop to keep the sector alive.

Peter Scott, chief executive of Dorset Chamber of Commerce & Industry, said: “Considering the dominance of the multiples, it is hardly surprising that some of the independents are having a hard time.

“Their plight certainly warrants some support; customers can do their bit by voting with their feet, their hearts and their brains as well as with their wallets.”

Independent traders empathises their variety.

Angus Reid, of Boscombe Traders Association, said: “The Royal Arcade, for example, will be buzzing.

“Every shop inside is privately owned and run, offering customers things from feet - nibbling fish to leopardskin lingerie.”
