Dorset Police have welcomed the conviction of Danilo Restivo for Heather Barnett's murder.

Speaking after the verdict, Detective Superintendent Mark Cooper, of Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “This verdict comes at the end of one of the most complicated investigations that Dorset Police has ever been faced with.

“The jury has heard of the tireless and complex work undertaken by the investigation team over the past eight and a half years. Our enquiries have seen us work closely alongside the Crown Prosecution Service, Italian investigators and a whole host of experts around the world.

“The court has also been told of the many hours that Danilo Restivo was monitored, not only to gather evidence, but also to ensure that the public remained safe.

“I am extremely proud of the work of this investigation team and I feel very privileged to work with such committed and determined colleagues.

“I believe that this dangerous predator had watched over Heather for some time and carefully planned this horrendous crime, even attempting to construct a false alibi to deceive the police.

“Despite his guilt, Restivo never moved away from his house that looked out onto Heather’s property and, perhaps most chilling of all, he even consoled her two children the afternoon following his cold and calculated actions.

“His attack on Heather – a well-loved, good-natured and devoted mother – has had a devastating impact on the Barnett family and we all hope now that those most affected can finally be allowed to move on.

“Their support in this investigation has been invaluable and I am confident that their wish for privacy will be respected.”
