HATS off to all those who took part in the Poole Race for Life yesterday. (Though given the hot conditions, I bet a large number of runners wished they had taken some form of headwear to keep the sun off.)

The annual Race for Life events – last weekend Bournemouth staged theirs – has seen thousands of women raise thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK.

Many of those running have deeply personal reasons for taking part. Many have given up large amounts of time to train for the event. As a result, all are getting fitter for a good cause.

Having taken part in a number of running events over the last three years, it’s an experience I would recommend to anyone.

It can be very moving to see participants overcome adversity to reach that finishing line. Everyone has a story to tell, everyone has a reason for entering. And at the same time, a charity is benefiting.

But our thanks should also go to the many ‘hidden’ individuals who make sure such events run as smoothly as possible. Without the help of organisers and volunteers on the day, the fun element of the event would be drastically reduced.

And talking of fun, well done to all those who don fancy dress for runs. Although I have to admit it’s been rather disappointing to be beaten by a waddling banana and a moustachioed ballerina.
