CELEBRATIONS to mark the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion were opened by actor Edward Fox in Wareham.

The distinguished actor, perhaps best known for the film Day of the Jackal, greeted guests to the party at the town hall, after the heavy rain and winds saw plans for a street party swiftly changed.

Malcolm Russell, chairman of Wareham Poppy Party, said: “We were washed out and had planned for an armoured car with the street blocked off and lots of bunting but the rain stopped those plans.

“However, we had a wonderful time in the town hall, helped of course by Edward Fox.

“He said he normally stopped for quarter of an hour at events like this but he was with us for more than three hours.”

Mr Russell described him as a ‘wonderful guy’.

The event, which included entertainment and music as well as cream teas and the attendance of local cadets, was raising money for the Legion’s Battle Back Centre – a state of the art facility to improve rehabilitation for troops.
