SPECIALIST officers continued to search an address in Bournemouth yesterday following a raid on a suspected crystal meth factory – the first in Dorset.

The address in Methuen Close, Springbourne was cordoned off on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the suspected manufacture and production of the highly addictive and illegal class A drug.

Yesterday morning forensic officers wearing protective clothing began their investigations.

Firefighters were also called to the address and five resident were evacutaed as a precautionary measure.

Four residents who were evacuated stayed with friends and family and one was found accommodation in a local hotel.

Inspector Chris Weeks, East Bournemouth Section Commander, said the risk was around the chemical used in the process to manufacture the drug.

He added: “Community intelligence has suggested that one of the premises in Methuen Close was being used to manufacture methamphetamine – commonly known as crystal meth.

“We would like to reassure the public that it is an isolated case, this type of activity is rare.

“We are determined to take a robust approach when dealing with individuals concerned in the manufacture and supply of drugs.”

A 56-year-old Bournemouth man has been arrested and is helping officers with their enquiries.

Dorset Police said the arrest was one of many made in Bournemouth over the past few months under their Operation Dismantle campaign.
