MORE than 100 crimes were committed in one Bournemouth road last month, new figures have shown with 40 incidents of antisocial behaviour and 30 violent crimes.

The shocking statistics come just two months after Fir Vale Road, a well-known haunt for clubbers and pub-goers, was named in the UK’s top 100 crime spots.

Since new crime maps were published, based on Home Office figures, crime has risen by almost a third in the area.

Last month 104 crimes were recorded, compared to 72 in December, with 33 incidents of antisocial behaviour, 17 violent crimes and 22 other crimes.

Crime, thought to be linked to the town’s night-time economy, is also on the increase in Lansdowne Crescent where 73 crimes were recorded last month, compared with 68 in February, including 39 incidents of antisocial behaviour and seven violent crimes.

Dorset Police Authority member and Bournemouth cabaret venue operator Cllr Nick King said: “It’s not surprising that these areas have most crime because they are the most heavily populated on Friday and Saturday nights.

“New changes to police shift patterns, giving more cover on the streets at the weekends, should help the situation.

“Alcohol pricing is one of the biggest problems with people getting drunk before they even come into town because they can buy it so cheaply in supermarkets.

“Many of our customers, particularly women, are smuggling bottles of alcohol into our premises that we are considering starting to search people at the door.

“Twenty-four hour drinking has been a disaster; it hasn’t brought about a continental café culture. While the vast majority of licensees are responsible, there are a small number who still flout the law and we needed tighter controls. Licensed premises should not serve people if they turn up drunk.”
