THE threat of forest sell-off may be over but a fledgling Christchurch campaign group is determined to have their voice heard.

The newly formed Friends of Hurn's Forests will hold a membership launch day on Sunday from midday-4pm at Hurn Bridge Sports Club.

Members hope to preserve and protect the local forests of Hurn, Ramsdown and Sopley for future generations and retain the current open access, conservation of all wildlife and sustainable wood protection.

A petition signed by local people has also been compiled, which will be presented to Christchurch MP Chris Chope on Sunday.

Founder of the Friends Margaret Phipps said: "The launch event will highlight many of the flora, fauna, and wildlife you may find in our forests.

"There will be displays about birds of prey, butterflies and moths, fungi, badgers, natural history, natural science, maps of the forest areas and more.

"I do hope local people will come to support our forests."

She said she hoped that once the Friends group is officially launched, the first meeting will be held in April.

Admission to the event is free.
