TWO schools will have solar panels installed as part of a pilot scheme designed to reduce Bournemouth Council’s carbon footprint.

Kingsleigh and Heathlands primary schools have volunteered to take part in the project, which will see photo-voltaic panels installed at the schools and up to 50 council homes.

The aim of the scheme is to generate renewable energy to benefit the environment and reduce electricity bills in suitable buildings.

“This is a fantastic scheme for the borough – we are one of the first authorities in the south to install solar panels,” said council leader and cabinet member for housing Peter Charon.

“I am delighted that Kingsleigh and Heathlands have elected to join the pilot scheme. We will be looking to roll it out to include all council housing, care homes and schools.”

Most of the scheme is funded through Mouchel, the council’s private sector partner, and overall investment could potentially be £22 million, with £12msaved on electricity bills.

Two types of solar panel will be used, one of which is new to the UK, and it is hoped that the scheme will generate up to 50 new jobs in the long term.
