ELECTORAL reform. There you see, I have lost your attention already no doubt.

However, the YES and NO campaigns are now lining up in the battle to change our electoral system from the First Past the Post system to the Alternative Vote.

This is the system which Nick Clegg described before the last general election as “a miserable little compromise,” but which he is now championing as one of the answers to the current crisis of confidence and faith in the political system.

He claims it is a “once in a generation opportunity” to bring change.

David Cameron takes the opposite view and warns that AV would bring more hung Parliaments.

We will all have a say (if we choose to) in this decision in the referendum to be held on May 5, the same day as the local elections.

The merits of switching or sticking are still to be property debated.

The laughable thing about Mr Clegg’s position is that he blames the existing voting system for encouraging politicians to abuse expenses, though as I recall, they needed no encouragement. He claims that MPs taking their constituents and their safe seats for granted was the problem.

No Mr Clegg. It’s because they were greedy and felt entitled to milk the system. And because they thought they could get away with it.
