A BOURNEMOUTH University student has been shot dead in a row with a bank manager in Turkey.

Dogukan Umut, 24, was killed in his hometown of Adana and had been a student since September.

He was believed to be studying for a masters degrees in international business management.

The Turkish press said the gunman was the husband of a female clerk who thought she said had been insulted during an argument.

Barras Stone, a lecturer at Bournemouth Business School, told the student news website Bourne Free that the gunman first shot Mr Umut’s businessman father then shot Mr Umut.

Mr Stone said: “It was tragic. He had gone home after the exams. An argument started with a bank clerk.

“When Dogukan wanted to fight back, he was shot dead.”

The incident happened on January 26 and the bloody aftermath of the attack, as the wounded father and dying son were put in an ambulance, was broadcast on TV. The Turkish press said that the original argument was about a bank charge on the transfer of money following the sale of a property.

The manager had arranged to meet the father and son, then opened fire after a second argument four or five minutes long.

The 38-year-old alleged gunman told a court he had lost control and that he regretted what had happened.

Elife Aklan, a worker at a Turkish café in Fir Vale Road, who shared a mutual friend with Mr Umut, told the Daily Echo: “I heard the bank was paying his student fee and they wanted to charge for this.

“They went to the bank to say they were usual customers, and they don’t usually get charged a lot. I don’t know how the argument became so big. The police are trying to find out the reasons.”
