COASTGUARDS are warning people to keep a safe distance from the seafront amid warnings of storm force winds set to batter the Dorset coast.
The Met Office warned of South Westerly gale force eight increasing storm force 10 imminent at about 12.37pm today (19).
A spokesperson for Portland Coastguard called for wave watchers to stay back from the seafront.
She said: “Don’t go near the water’s edge.”
“There are some prominent coastal patches where people go to watch the waves crashing, which seems like a good idea until you get caught by one, which is potentially fatal.”
And she urged anyone walking dogs on the seafront not to enter the sea in pursuit of their pets.
“Dogs are like a member of the family and it can be heartbreaking to watch it in trouble.
"But the dog is often ‘spat out’ out of the water, which doesn’t always happen with humans,” the spokesperson warned.
Portland Coastguard described Weymouth Bay as a “total whiteout”.
