DRIVERS have been warned not to spend Christmas behind bars for the sake of drink or drugs.

Police arrested 44 motorists for driving under the influence between December 1 and 14.

And they will be out and about with extra patrols and roadside tests until the annual festive drink and drug driving campaign ends on January 1.

"The next two weeks will see the Christmas party season in full flow with lots of people out celebrating and enjoying themselves" said Chief Inspector Bob Nichols, head of the Dorset Police Traffic Unit.

"I want people to have a good time but I don't want to see anyone stupid enough to drive while under the influence of alcohol."

Chief Insp Nichols said members of the public should book a taxi, have a designated driver or arrange overnight accommodation but warned they could still be over the limit the following morning.

He also urged friends and relatives to talk people out of driving if they have been drinking and asked people to dial 999 to report vehicle details if they suspect a driver has been drinking or taking drugs.

Penalties include a minimum driving ban of 12 months, six months in jail or a fine up to £5,000.

Members of the public can report offenders by dialling 999 or 01202 222222 or by calling the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
