A COUPLE seriously injured in a car crash that killed a Poole dad-of-two are recovering well.

Rachel Shear and Gary Burney were both passengers in the Honda Civic that collided with a lamppost on the Dorset Way on November 14, killing driver Phil Padmore, 25.

Stephen Shear, Rachel’s dad, told the Daily Echo his daughter had been transferred to Salisbury Hospital to reconstruct her broken leg.

“She suffered a break of the top half of her right leg and above the ankle,” he said.

“They feared they might have to amputate it on the night of the accident, but the surgeons worked their magic.”

Ms Shear, 23, is expected to return to Poole Hospital this week to continue her rehabilitation.

Mr Burney, also 23, suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung in the crash but was now out of hospital.

Mr Shear admitted the news of the crash was “every parent’s worst nightmare” and that police had told him the couple had been very lucky to survive.

He said Mr Padmore had spent the night at Mr Burney’s house and was driving home to see his children when the accident happened.

“Gary was travelling in the front and Rachel was sat in the middle of the back seat as there were two baby chairs either side,” said Mr Shear.

“But neither of them have been really able to remember what happened yet.”

An inquest was opened and adjourned into Mr Padmore’s death earlier this month.

The cause of death was given as multiple injuries.

A funeral service for the popular dad, held in Canford Heath last week, attracted more than 200 people.
