A DORSET police chief is warning of the devastating consequences of getting behind the wheel after downing alcohol or taking drugs, just 24 hours from the launch of this year’s Christmas drink and drug driving campaign.
Chief Inspector Bob Nichols, head of Dorset police’s traffic unit, said: “Not only do drink drivers risk their own lives, they also risk the lives of innocent road users. My advice is simple – don’t get behind the wheel after drinking any alcohol as research has shown that even one drink can impair the ability to drive.”
“The legal consequences of being caught include a minimum 12 month driving ban, a criminal record, up to six months in prison and a fine of up to £5,000.”
There will be increased traffic patrols from tomorrow (Wed) until Saturday, January 1 as well as roadside checks and every driver involved in a collision will be breath tested.
Members of the public are being urged to dial 999 if they suspect someone is driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
* Almost half of those arrested last year were under the age of 30.
