THE shattering sound of the Wimborne militia’s muskets was heard at the town’s annual Christmas lights switch on.
They fired off an eight-man volley with their 17th century replica weapons in the town’s square on Saturday in a tradition to ward off evil spirits.
Two children won a painting competition to have the honour of turning on Christmas tree lights at 4pm, followed by the other lights on a timer.
Noah Brown, five, of Wimborne First School, and Abigail Van Etten, five, of St John’s First School, literally flicked the switch of a socket connected to the tree with an extension cord.
The band of Allenbourn Middle School played eight carols from 3.30pm to a crowd that was around 300 strong.
Stars from the Dick Whittington pantomime at the Tivoli Theatre mingled with the audience and town crier Chris Brown made a mockery of the need for loudspeakers.
