To be honest, I’m a little scared to be writing this review what with Rhod dedicating the first ten minutes or so to his own scathing review of his reviewers. However, unlike the majority of the afore-mentioned reviews, I quite like Rhod’s style of delivery so I think we’re safe.

Supporting him was his flatmate, and co-host of his BBC show, Lloyd Langford. I did think that Lloyd struggled to find a rapport with his audience as there was a restless vibe going on (which was later cleared up when Rhod asked the audience if we were really expecting him on at 19:30 when he was told Lloyd should go on at 20:00) however he did put in a decent, if forgettable performance.

Rhod’s performance didn’t disappoint at all. His explanation of the thoughts behind this year’s show title and the clever link to the conclusion of his performance (I won’t spoil it here) just proves how brilliant a mind he has. This was further emphasised by my personal highlight at the end. Naturally, the audience was calling out for more, which at first Rhod was reluctant to do, stating tiredness due to a recent bout of pneumonia. Members of the audience the shouted out random snippets of their favourite Rhod Gilbert moments, from previous shows to his TV adverts for the Welsh countryside.

Proving just how quickly his mind works, and providing a brief glimpse into how he composes his shows, Rhod would latch onto a phrase and work it into why he should leave the stage now and end the show. My favourite of these being the luggage one where he carefully (and quickly) explained why that joke wouldn’t work as he didn’t have the luggage handle and it won’t be that funny as the audience was reciting the joke back, almost word for word. I always say that the biggest feel-good factor of being a rock star would be when the audience sings your songs back to you. Rhod’s face showed the same applies to comedy.
