DON’T be fooled by the Jackie Collins-esque cover and title.

Nina Bell bravely delves beneath the surface of an outwardly ordinary middle-class family and tackles the issues of domestic abuse, alcoholism and family dynamics.

Paige and Bill have an apparently successful marriage.

Their two daughters Sophie and Jess think little of their mother’s meek and mild nature and their father’s constant put-downs until the situation escalates and their happy family façade is shattered.

This is a gripping analysis of the different relationships within families and the author deserves credit for managing to keep the outcome hanging in the balance until the very end.
