IT’S official – the Army at Bovington Garrison has gone green.
Armoured troops have taken a break from their gas-guzzling fighting vehicles to get to grips with recycling at the camp.
Purbeck District Council has been helping soldiers, who are training to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan, work towards more unfamiliar waste and recycling targets.
The Armoured Centre’s rolling stock may boast unenviable fuel consumption, and it is doubtful these heavyweight vehicles would pass a standard emissions test, but this hasn’t deterred Army top brass from sanctioning an enhanced environmental scheme on base.
Until recently the Army used private contractors to collect base waste, and much of this ended up in landfill. But now district council workers will collect the camp’s waste and recycling.
