A final call is being made for fundraisers to sign up for this year’s Daily Echo-backed Ferndown Relay For Life.

Some 36 teams have already signed up for this year’s 24-hour walkathon around the athletics track behind Ferndown leisure centre on Cherry Grove.

Money raised will be used to support the vital efforts of Cancer Research UK.

Organiser, Fiona Moorey, said she hoped to smash last year’s fundraising total of £66,000.

“I’m confident we can beat last year’s total. In the first year, we raised £15,000 and £33,000 the next. This year we’re hoping to raise £80,000.

“We want as many people to come along on the day and show their support for everyone taking part. It’s going to be a fantastic day, ” said Fiona.

Fundraisers will take to the track at midday on Saturday July 17 and finish their marathon effort the following morning.

People who have suffered the disease will be first on the track to take part in a “survivors’ lap”, featuring some 51 fundraisers aged between seven and 91 who have battled the disease.

Those lost to cancer, and people living with the condition, will be remembered in a poignant “Candle of Hope” ceremony to be held at 10pm.

The ceremony looks set to be the sole solemn moment in a weekend of celebration in which music and entertainment will be laid on to keep up the spirits of participants and spectators.
